How to configure Stream Deck with OBS

Map scenes, mutes, recording, and stream to keys you can verify without looking down or risking a live show.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Install the app and detect the device

    Connect the device directly to the computer and open Stream Deck. Confirm that its model appears and that a key can display an icon before opening OBS. Update the app or device only when you have time to repeat a full test.

    What you should see: The device appears, one key accepts an icon, and you can identify the test profile.

    Add the OBS integration

    Find the OBS Studio integration in the app and drag it to an empty key. With OBS open, check that the action no longer waits. Elgato documents scene, mixer, recording, stream, and source-visibility actions, but confirm one action first.

    What you should see: OBS actions appear in the action list.

  3. 03

    Name scenes first

    Use names you can read under pressure, such as Starting, Game, Be Right Back, and Ending. Avoid near-duplicate names. Check microphone and Discord source names in the mixer too, because Stream Deck can only run the name that exists in OBS.

    What you should see: Each key can point to one clear scene.

  4. 04

    Map visible scene changes

    Assign a large key to each scene with text or color you can recognize at a glance. Test it in preview and, if you use Studio Mode, confirm whether it changes Preview or Program. Do not start with a multi-action.

  5. 05

    Add mute with the mixer open

    Map microphone mute first and speak with the mixer open. Then map Discord or another independent source. Give similar sources distinct names, because a well-made key still fails when it points at the wrong source.

    What you should see: The correct meter responds to every key.

  6. 06

    Keep record and stream separate

    Put Record and Stream on separate keys with different labels and positions. Elgato has a long-press option for Record. Check that the stream key is not beside an action that stops output or changes a sensitive scene.

    What you should see: One press cannot confuse the two states.

  7. 07

    Build and test a multi-action

    Only after validating each part, chain actions in the real order, such as opening Starting, recording, then enabling a source. Add a recovery key for a safe scene. Make a full recording and watch it before using the sequence live.

    What you should see: Playback confirms scenes, audio, and states.

If something does not work

A key says Waiting for OBS.
Open OBS, check the integration, and reconnect it. Confirm the Elgato version requirement too.
It mutes the wrong source.
Edit the action and select the exact source. Test with the mixer visible before going live.
A multi-action stops midway.
Split it into individual actions and test the order. Rejoin only steps that already work.

No. OBS has keyboard shortcuts. Stream Deck helps when keys show a visible, tested action.

What should I map first?

Scenes and microphone mute. Both are easy to verify in a local recording.

It can, but separate keys reduce confusion when recovering from an error.
