Your first streaming setup
How to start streaming with a minimum setup
Test your current gear in OBS before buying more. Check your voice, decide whether you want a camera and choose a useful first upgrade for your stream.

Short answer
Before you start
- A computer that can run OBS. Read its current system requirements before installing.
- An available microphone to test, including one already built into your equipment.
- The game, window or other content you want viewers to see.
- A camera or phone is optional. This walkthrough is for streaming from a computer.

What to do
- 01
Check the computer before adding gear to your basket
OBS: system requirements ↗Is your shopping list already longer than your first stream? Start with a test. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS warns that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee streaming performance. Use the wizard to find a starting configuration for the computer you have.
How you'll know it's working: The wizard displays suggested settings for your chosen configuration.
- 02
Build a scene without committing to a webcam
OBS: sources guide ↗In the OBS Sources panel, click + and choose what the stream should show. A window, a supported game or an image can be your starting point. Camera capture is another source you can add when you want it. Keep the scene focused on the content you plan to stream.
How you'll know it's working: Your chosen content appears in the preview without requiring a camera source.
- 03
Check which microphone OBS is hearing
OBS: audio setup ↗Speak while watching the microphone meter in the OBS mixer. If it stays still or captures the wrong device, open Settings > Audio and select the microphone you mean to use. Give the poor microphone a chance before blaming it for a setting.
How you'll know it's working: The microphone meter reacts to your voice rather than to a different input.
- 04
Try a phone if you want a camera
VDO.Ninja: getting started ↗VDO.Ninja can send phone video and audio into OBS. Its basic route is to open VDO.Ninja on the phone, choose Add your Camera to OBS, allow camera and microphone access, press Start and add the viewing link as an OBS Browser Source. This is optional if your stream does not use a camera. Keep the viewing link out of public chat.
How you'll know it's working: The phone picture appears in the Browser Source. If you skipped the camera, your existing scene is ready for the recording test.
- 05
Make a short recording before spending
OBS: testing settings ↗Use Start Recording in OBS and try your planned content for a few minutes. Stop the recording, then play the file back and check what a viewer would hear and see. Write down any problem that would stop you using this setup, such as unclear speech or stuttering video. That gives a future purchase a specific job. This local recording checks capture, not the upload connection for a live stream.
How you'll know it's working: The saved recording lets you inspect the picture and listen to your voice.
- 06
Choose one upgrade with a reason
Nicole Rojas: public episode description ↗The public description of the related episode puts upgrades in this order: microphone, lighting, then camera. Use that as a starting point when an improvement is needed. Put one possible purchase on your list and name the problem it should fix. If the recording works for you, leave the purchase for later. The shopping basket can have a day off.
How you'll know it's working: Your upgrade list names one problem to solve, or stays empty because the current setup passed your test.
If something does not work
- OBS opens, but the recording stutters
- Opening OBS does not prove that the computer can handle your chosen stream settings. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard again and use the OBS settings guide before deciding that you need a different computer.
- The microphone meter never reacts
- Go to Settings > Audio and select the microphone you intend to use. Speak again and check the meter before making another recording.
- Your voice is captured twice
- Look for the same device in both an audio source and Settings > Audio. OBS warns that this duplication can cause an echo, so keep a single capture route for that microphone. If the phone microphone is also active, check that it is not adding a second capture of the same voice.
- You still cannot decide what to buy
- Name the part of the recording you want to improve before looking at products. If nothing specific is stopping you, keep using the current equipment and revisit the purchase later.
Before your next stream
- You can describe the stream you will make with the equipment already available.
- You listened to the whole test and could understand the speech.
- You checked the scene for private information before sharing it publicly.
- Your optional upgrades are separate from what this stream actually needs.
- And that's it, you have something to test rather than a shopping deadline. Use the OBS microphone guide if the voice needs attention.

Related video from Nicole (in Spanish) ↗Common questions
Do I need a professional microphone?
Try the microphone you already have and listen to the result. Clear enough speech gives you a starting point without requiring an immediate replacement.
Can I stream without a camera?
You can build an OBS scene without adding a camera source. Show a window, a supported game or images instead.
Can my phone replace a webcam?
VDO.Ninja can send phone video and audio to an OBS Browser Source through a viewing link. The separate phone camera guide covers that workflow if you want to test it before buying a webcam.
Which upgrade should come first?
The related episode's public description suggests microphone, lighting, then camera. Match that order to what your recording needs rather than treating it as a list you must finish before starting.
How much should a minimum setup cost?
There is no single budget for this workflow because your existing equipment determines what you still need. Test it first, then set a spending limit for the specific problem you want to fix.
Will any computer that runs OBS stream well?
Not necessarily. OBS says basic compatibility does not guarantee streaming or recording performance, which also depends on settings and scene complexity.
