How to use your phone as a webcam in OBS

Step by step

  1. 01

    Create the camera in VDO.Ninja

    Open VDO.Ninja on the phone, choose to share your camera, and select the lens you want. You do not need an account or another installed app.

    Choose the rear camera when you need more detail. Add a password when the room stays open and share the link only within your own setup.

    What you should see: The phone shows the chosen camera and the room is protected if you plan to keep it open.

    Copy the view link

    Review effects and add a password if needed. Copy the view link generated for the room. This is the link OBS receives.

    Open the link on the computer before touching OBS. Confirm that it receives the right camera and keep the link away from any scene that may go live.

    Paste the link into a Browser Source

    In OBS, add a Browser Source and paste the link. In her example, Nicole raises the VDO.Ninja bitrate to 2500 for a cleaner image.

  4. 04

    Light your face from one side

    Place a lamp or ring light about 45 degrees from your face. If it looks harsh, point the light at a pale wall and use the reflected light.

    Watch the preview for shadows and reflections. Bouncing light from a pale wall often gives a more even face than pointing a harsh lamp straight at it.

    What you should see: The face is visible without a hard shadow covering the eyes or expression.

    Crop and adjust the image

    Hold Alt while dragging the source edges. Then test focus, brightness, contrast, saturation, and white balance with small changes.

    Make small changes and compare them with the unfiltered view. Leave room for alerts, captions, or game information.

  6. 06

    Manage heat, battery, and internet

    This method depends on the connection and can warm up the phone. Keep it charging, close other apps, and run a longer test before going live.

    Clap once where the camera can see it while you speak. If the clap or lips arrive late, lower the network load and repeat a test that lasts several minutes.

    What you should see: A longer test keeps picture, sync, and battery stable without repeated drops.

If something does not work

OBS shows an empty room
Copy the view link again and confirm that the phone is still inside the room.
The picture cuts out
Use a more stable connection or lower resolution and bitrate. Test for several minutes before judging the change.
Voice and picture arrive at different times
Make a visible clap, lower the network load, and repeat the test. Lighting cannot repair connection delay.

Do I need to install an app to use VDO.Ninja?

No. Nicole's workflow runs in the phone browser and uses a Browser Source in OBS.

What are the drawbacks of using a phone as a webcam?

It depends on a stable connection, uses battery, and can heat the phone. It is also less convenient if you need the phone to read chat.

Does the phone need the same network as the computer?

Both devices need stable access. The same network can help, but it does not guarantee a clean feed.

Can I read chat on the same phone?

It is awkward while the phone sends the camera. Use another device or put chat in a computer window.
