How to choose the best OBS settings for your PC

Use OBS Stats to find whether the limit is network, GPU, or encoding before lowering quality at random.

Short answer

The best OBS settings depend on the bottleneck that appears during a test. Open View > Stats and separate network dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag. Then change one variable, such as bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or encoder, and repeat the same scene under the same load.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Duplicate the profile before changing it

    Open Profile > Duplicate and name the copy Test. Profiles save output, video, and connection settings. You can return to the working setup without rebuilding scenes.

    What you should see: Two profiles appear and your scenes remain intact.

  2. 02

    Run a bandwidth test

    Under Settings > Stream, use Twitch's available bandwidth test mode and start a stream without an audience. Reproduce the real load with game, camera, alerts, and scene changes.

    What you should see: OBS sends a test session without announcing a broadcast.

  3. 03

    Read the three losses separately

    Open View > Stats. Network dropped frames point to the connection. Rendering lag points to GPU load. Encoding lag means the selected encoder cannot keep up.

  4. 04

    Fix the network first

    For network loss, use Ethernet, stop uploads, and measure stable upload speed. Lower bitrate until you have headroom. Judge Dynamic Bitrate by the test, not as an automatic cure.

    Reduce rendering load

    For rendering lag, close GPU-accelerated apps and lower output resolution. Test 30 FPS before removing sources or rebuilding scenes you still need.

  6. 06

    Choose an encoder your PC can sustain

    Test a hardware encoder available on your GPU. With x264, the CPU handles the work. Keep everything else unchanged and compare Stats in the same scene.

  7. 07

    Confirm the complete output

    Turn off test mode, check server, key, and title, then record two minutes before going live. Watch the file and open the platform preview on another device.

    What you should see: Picture, sound, and Stats pass the final test.

    Compare two tests, not two memories

    Repeat the scene for the same duration with the old and new setting. Save Stats at the beginning and end. Keep a change only when it reduces the rising counter without creating another failure.

    What you should see: You have comparable readings and a concrete reason to keep the change.

    Save a recovery configuration

    Rename the stable profile with resolution and date. Export it and record encoder, bitrate, resolution, and FPS. If an update or driver changes performance, return to this baseline before investigating.

    What you should see: You can restore the last tested profile without relying on memory.

If something does not work

Network dropped frames rise.
Use Ethernet, stop uploads, and lower bitrate. Repeat ten minutes before changing resolution.
Rendering lag rises.
Close GPU-heavy apps, cap game FPS, and test a smaller output.
Encoding lag rises.
Try a hardware encoder or lighter preset. Keep the scene unchanged for the comparison.
One metric improves while another gets worse.
Undo the last change and repeat. Lower FPS or resolution first when rendering and encoding compete. Save both Stats captures and the OBS log for the identical scene.

Common questions

Is there one perfect setting for every PC?

No. The same resolution can fail because of network, GPU, or encoding. Stats tells you which resource to change.

Should I stream at 60 FPS?

Only when the content needs it and the test stays stable. Stable 30 FPS can look better than 60 FPS with loss.

Is NVENC always better than x264?

It depends on available hardware and game load. Compare both with the same scene and read encoding lag.

Does lowering bitrate fix all lag?

No. It helps when output exceeds the connection. It does not fix an overloaded GPU or CPU.

What should I save after a stable test?

Export the profile and note scene, encoder, bitrate, resolution, FPS, server, duration, and final counters. That record exposes what changed after an update.
