How to set up Twitch Channel Points and rewards your chat will use

Set up Channel Points, custom rewards, cooldowns, community challenges, and a small reward menu that you can actually fulfill.

Short answer

In Creator Dashboard, open Viewer Rewards and Channel Points, enable the program, name it, and add a small set of rewards. Start with requests you can fulfill while live, then set cooldowns and per-stream limits. Twitch also supports Smart Costs and community challenges. Test each reward from chat before you publish a long menu.

    Open Channel Points

    In Creator Dashboard, open Viewer Rewards and Channel Points. Twitch says the program is available to monetized streamers and can be toggled off from this page.

    What you should see: The Channel Points settings page shows the enable control.

    Name the currency and icon

    Choose a name your chat can say quickly and upload a readable icon. Keep the icon distinct from Bits and subscriptions so a viewer can tell what they are spending.

    Keep default rewards under control

    Review default rewards and Smart Costs. Leave a reward active only when you know what viewers receive and how often you can handle it.

    What you should see: The default menu fits your stream pace and does not promise work you cannot do.

    Add three custom rewards

    Use one low-cost interaction, one request that needs your response, and one occasional activity. Write the exact action in each description, then require text when the viewer must provide a game name or prompt.

    Set cooldowns and limits

    Add a cooldown plus per-stream and per-viewer limits to rewards that can flood the queue. Twitch's creator guide currently documents cooldowns from 1 minute to 7 days.

    Create one community challenge

    Set a single target with a clear finish line. Explain what happens when the target is reached, then let the chat contribute from the Channel Points panel.

    Test the queue with a moderator

    Redeem each new reward from a viewer account or test setup. Check the Activity Feed and have a mod mark one complete, reject one, and pause redemptions if the queue grows.

If something does not work

Rewards keep piling up
Raise the cooldown or lower the per-stream limit. Ask a mod to open the queue and pause redemptions while you catch up.
Viewers do not understand a reward
Rewrite the title and description with one action and one expected response. Require text only when it helps fulfillment.
A challenge feels impossible
Lower the target or extend its duration. State the outcome before chat contributes.

Who can use Channel Points?

How many rewards should I create?

Can a viewer submit private information in a reward?

Do not ask for personal information. Twitch says custom reward responses appear in chat.

What is Smart Costs?

Smart Costs can adjust default reward costs based on audience size and redemption rate. You can turn it off or set your own costs.
